Chapter 17

In Chapter 17, the town has a funeral for Tom, Huck and Joe Harper.  What they didn't know was that Tom, Huck and Joe were still alive and were watching the funeral take place.  Halfway through the funeral the boys walk down the isle.  Everyone was in shock and happy to see the boys safe and sound.  Everyone went up to Tom and Joe giving them hugs and kisses.  No one went to see Huck.  Then Tom told his aunt no one was happy to see Huck, so his aunt said, " Well I'm happy to see Huck!"  as she ran to him giving him hugs and kisses only making the whole thing even more awkward for Huck.

Chapter 16

Chapter 16 starts off when Joe realizes that he is starting to get homesick and wants to leave. Joe suggests leaving and Tom is willing to go with him. Huck refuses to go and tells the boys he will share his secret if they are willing to stay. Tom and Joe decide to stay in exchange for Huck teaching them both how to smoke. After smoking in the afternoon, Tom and Joe feel sick and decide to go lay down. Their bad luck was not over because that evening it started to storm. The boys were terrified! The storm carried away their tent. The boys huddles together under a burnt tree and stay there until morning. They decide that they need to now be indians and true indians smoke a peace pipe. This time the boys did not get nearly as sick.

From a hidden location under the bed, tom hears everyone (except Sid) share how much they miss the boys. They wished they had been kinder to them. Tom learns that the groups of ships found the boys raft downstream and everyone assumes they have drowned. Tom waits until everyone has gone to bed and debates on leaving the note for Aunt Polly. He decides against it and heads back to join his fellow pirates on the island again.

Chapter 14: Happy Camp of Freeboaters

Tom, Huck and Joe Harper awoke to the sound of a muffled boom.  It was a cannon.  The book states that when people were suspected of drowning in the lake, the vibration of the boom make the dead bodies rise up to the top.  "They done that last summer, when Bill Turner got drowned.  They shoot a cannon over the water; That makes em come up to the top".
