Chapter 1: "Tom Plays, Fights and Hides"

Mark Twain states in the first chapter of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" that he is a very tricky boy. An example straight from the story is when aunt Polly says "Ain't he played me tricks enough like that for me to be looking out for him?" This shows Tom is very tricky and Aunt Polly falls for his tricks. Tom may be good at tricking people but he is not good at keeping the lie going. My proof from the text is "She'd never noticed it if it hadn't been for Sid". This shows that he got caught even if it wasn't necessarily him, but instead his half-brother Sidney. Tom is a trouble maker and a strong boy also. The passage states "Now that'll learn you! Better look out who you're foolin with next time". This shows that he taught the kid a lesson and was warning him to watch out. This shows how Tom is a sneaky, tough boy and a professional at getting into trouble.
